Melvin Price Ree
167 years after the founding of the United States Marine Corps, Melvin Price Ree from Minneapolis, Minnesota would enlist and become what would be known as a "Wake Island Avenger." The title of "Wake Island Avenger" was given to those Marines that enlisted on 10 November 1942, 11 months after the surrender of American Forces on Wake Island.
Mr. Ree was a 1942 Graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was the President of the Chi Epsilon Fraternity for Civil Engineering Scholars. A Fraternity that promoted Character, Practicality, Scholarship, and Sociability.
Roughly 2 years after Graduating Mr. Ree would be fighting on the little known islands of Cape Gloucester and Talasea as an Amphibious Scout, Radioman, and Sniper. Trained in Stalking his enemy, the once esteemed Scholar had Killed 4 "Japs" and captured 7 more by April 1944.
Mr. Ree would serve with Scout Company, 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division until the formation of Reconnaissance Company, Division Headquarters, 1st Marine Division. With Reconnaissance Company, Mr. Ree would fight on Peleliu Island, as an Amphibious Scout and point man; and Okinawa, as a Scout Observer.
Mr. Ree would be Honorably Discharged from the United States Marine Corps on 15 December 1945 after 3 years of Service.
